We understand that working with children and young people who may display sexualised behaviour can feel worrying, stressful and frightening. This training aims to support professionals working in any setting or context to understand the differences between harmful sexual behaviour, problematic sexual behaviour and developmentally appropriate behaviour whilst also reflecting on their own responses and next steps. The possible signs of harmful sexual behaviour will be discussed alongside potential influences on behaviours from a range of factors. Opportunities to collaborate with others and reflect on current practice are included in the session and will allow practitioners to network and garner new skills. The training will also cover signposting to other useful tools and resources.
This 2.5 hour training will look at the differences between harmful sexual behaviour, problematic sexual behaviour and developmentally appropriate behaviour. We are aware that school staff will often say that children are engaging in “harmful sexual behaviour” in their contact with us without a deep enough understanding about what harmful sexual behaviour actually is. We recognise this can be anxiety provoking and worrying for staff so want to support them to understand this and be aware of their own responses to this. We will look at examples of behaviours and try to develop and understanding for practitioners around what harmful sexual behaviour may actually be.
The course will look at influencing factors on behaviour, responses, and opportunities for practitioners to reflect on their current practice and meet others.
